I’m sure there are plenty of aching legs in the Shire this morning!

Yesterday over 7000 people lined up to take part in the 2010 Sutherland to Surf. The overnight rain made for a very wet road, but the sun came out as the pelaton (I have Le Tour fever) followed the Kingsway down to the Cronulla beaches towards the finish, making for an enjoyable (and exhausting) morning.

Rachael, Murray and Natalie from the Beach and Bay team ran the 11km in (almost) record time. Kylie’s fund raising efforts are focused elsewhere as she runs the final legs of her own personal marathon as Dry July draws ever closer to its end!

Beach and Bay were part of the Australian Youth Against Cancer (AYAC) running group, who collectively managed to raise over $4000 (and counting). Beach and Bay would like to congratulate Chris Boyd and the AYAC team on their efforts yesterday in raising so much money.

Congratulations also to everyone who completed the 11km course. The City to Surf is coming up next month and spots are filling very fast, so get involved! Online registration can be found here.

The Sutherland to Surf is fast approaching, which means my well-planned and rigorous training schedule is quickly falling by the wayside. In my mind I planned to run a few days a week in the months leading up to the race, but the body just couldn’t follow through. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

If you haven’t already, sign up! You can walk, run or roll the 11km down to Wanda Beach from Sutherland in any fashion you choose. 5000 competitors are expected to line up this year in the 39th Sutherland to Surf.

The team at Beach and Bay will be there with bells on. We are running with Australian Youth Against Cancer (AYAC), a charity we have featured on our blog before. If you sign up and want to help out a worthy cause, jump on their website to join their running group or email ayac.fundraising@gmail.com.

Saturday

Saturday morning started at 10am with a long leisurely walk along the Esplanade with some friends. There was a chill to the air but nothing a warm jacket and scarf couldn’t handle. The sun was out and hundreds of walkers and joggers were making their way up and down the Cronulla coastline.

The surf was pretty decent so my friends and I sat on the wooden fence at the Wall for 15 minutes watching the action. We then slowly made out way down to the Grind Expresso to wake up and discuss last nights antics that took place. Grind is a famous coffee shop in Cronulla, and if you didn’t know that already, you would have guessed it was something special with the line being 20 people deep and out the door. A staff member came along the line taking orders but no one seemed too fussed to wait, especially when there is so much to look at in the cafe. Grinds owner, Richard has a wonderful collection of antique coffee memorabilia, and the photos of customers from all over the world holding up a sign “I’d rather be at Grind” are enough to pass the time.

Latte’s and long blacks were ordered and we decided to head to Shelley Park as it was too busy for our party of 4 to sit inside the cafe. We found a sunny spot on the hill overlooking South Cronulla Beach and South Cronulla Pavillion and watched as families played, lifesavers were on patrol, and the seriously brave went swimming.

On the way home the girls split from the boys and we ventured into Northies to see the Northies Designer Markets – a collection of clothing, accessories and goods by local fashion designers. Stand out brand was “Stevie & Me” which had some adorable children’s clothes. Fortunately I don’t have any children so my fresh wages didn’t take a beating.

Sunday

Sunday got off to a late start as I caught up with some sleep (Ghana VS Australia 12am the night before). Again, I made my way to Grind with a girlfriend and we both got some hot chocolates and took a seat and read the Sunday papers. After we had finished we made our way to the Shabby Chic Vintage By The Sea Markets held in the Masonic Lodge on the Kingsway, Cronulla. I found out about these markets through researching for our Cronulla Buzz website, so I had to check them out for myself! What a treat! These were great if only just to look at. So many pinks and purples and crocheted fabric!

The outside lawn was scattered with beautiful ornate furniture, vintage mirrors and birdcages. Inside, there were clothing stalls, books, jewellery and home decorations. It really was a pleasure to the eyes, prices were reasonable depending on what the item was (some collectors clothing pieces were in the $200+ range) and to top it off there was a cupcake stall!

Entry was by donation and proceeds went to the NSW Down Syndrome Association.

The rest of the day was spent in the mall browsing the various clothing outlets – Rundles, Funky Femme, Flirty, Dutchee Dutchee and the great shoe shop Freelance scored $300 of our money.

The weather was turning a bit cold and as my friend and I don’t follow football (sorry) and Cronulla Sharks were versing St George Dragons we decided to hire a video from Civic in Cronulla Central. Grey’s Anatomy, blankets and more hot chocolate. A perfect winter weekend in Cronulla.

As we all wished Liz a big ‘Happy Birthday’ over the weekend and enjoyed every moment of Monday morning’s sleep in, some people still had to go to work. Including a fifteen year old kid named Sam Strachan.

Sam competed in the Brett Young Memorial Trials held at Cronulla Point on Sunday alongside a field of international riders, all vying for a spot in the Shark Island Challenge. With a heavy fan base and plenty of support, Sam finished second overall behind South African Dan Worsely.

He now has secured a spot in the main event, and has been drawn against fellow local rider and good mate Shaun Pyne. Also competing in the event is former world champion Ben Player; and the most influential bodyboarder to never win a world title – Ryan Hardy, whose peers actually voted as the best in the world for years.

I can’t confirm this outright, but I’m almost certain Sam is the youngest ever competitor in the history of the challenge. Ben Hansen made the Challenge a few years back at a young age, though he most certainly was over sixteen.

We wish Sam and Shaun the best of luck. Conditions this week won’t be ideal for the Challenge to run, but I will review the forecasts next week so stay tuned for an update then.

In other news, Nick Omerod is replacing Michael Novy for Unite Clothing. Novy fractured his verterbrae in his back whilst surfing the Zone (a notoriously heavy wave on the central coast) over the weekend. We hope he makes a full recovery.

In 2009, Caringbah youth Chris Boyd was diagnosed with cancer. He had a rare type of malignant tumour the size of a table tennis ball in his sinus cavity. Fortunately, he was given high chances of a full recovery and less than a year later he is now back to his former self.

With new life comes new opportunities, and now Chris has decided to help others and founded Australian Youth Against Cancer – a charity aimed to support youth cancer sufferers and survivors. Chris identified a gap in the support system whilst he was enduring his treatment. There were children’s charities, women’s charities and various other institutions but none were tailored to the youth bracket.

Chris and his mate Ian Bacon, are gearing up to paddle the entire length of the Murray River. This will be their inaugural fundraising event, with more events planned throughout the year. They were recently featured in the Sutherland Shire Leader, to read the full article see here.

Chris is also organising a group to run in the Sutherland to Surf. If you’re registered to run, or plan on running, contact AYAC through their website or visit this event page to see how you can be a part and help AYAC raise awareness. Three Beach & Bay Realty staff members have already signed up to run for AYAC. Now it’s time to start training….

It is no secret that surfing and bodyboarding have a rich history of mutual disdain, but the Challenge is the only competitive bodyboarding competition that was recognised as a professional international competition.

For years the Shark Island Challenge was part of the World Tour of Bodyboarding, and was one of five stops on an international circuit of touring professionals. The 2010 competition is not part of this tour, having being scrapped for lack of funding. That’s not to say there will be a shortage of talent though.

The competitive field this year is made up of both local and international riders selected from industry sponsors, which this year includes two former world champions. Among the field of competitors, watch out for two young local riders John Showell of Cronulla, and Shaun Pyne of Gymea. Shaun has been deserved of a place in the Challenge for some time now and it’s great to see the organisers recognising his talent and offering him a spot.

The Challenge will run over one day in the most suitable conditions in the month-long waiting period, from June 14th to July 14th. Check out Fluidzone for more information.

For other events that are happening around Cronulla in the next few weeks, don’t forget to check Cronulla Buzz.

On Saturday the 5th of June Beach & Bay Realty hosted a fundraising event for Teneile Pawley (see previous blogs here or here) at The Brass Monkey Cronulla. The night was a huge success with beautiful finger food, fantastic live music, plenty of wine and lots of dancing.

The night was a party to celebrate the fundraising efforts done by Beach & Bay agent Natalie Vials (who helped organise everything), Steven Vials (who ran 250km through The Kimberleys), Beach & Bay (who created a website and raised awareness) and The Pawley’s wonderful friends and family who also drummed up attention and lots and lots of money. $4000 was raised from the event, bringing the total raised so far to $20,000. This money will go towards Teneile’s medical costs and the love and support shown for the Pawley’s has been overwhelming.

The night started with acoustic gigs from a wide variety of musicians. Everyone chatted away and got to know each other, enjoyed the never ending supply of food and stocked up on drinks. Yvette Vials sang her beautiful version of “Fix You” by Coldplay which has been the song on our website. Special mention also goes to Teneile’s boyfriend Hayden who flew down from Queensland to sing a song for Teneile (it melted our hearts!).

Before the headlining act Chunk came on tables and chairs were stacked away and a dancefloor was created (it was needed!). Chunk plugged in and played a high energy, crazy-fun set with everyone hitting the dancefloor at some stage and singing along.

THANK YOU

On behalf of Beach & Bay I would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has been involved. It has been a very humbling experience to help the Pawley’s in this small way – and the generosity from everyone has just been amazing. Thank you to all the clients of Beach & Bay that came along and let down their hair. We know you all enjoyed it!

Thank you to The Brass Monkey for being so accommodating and letting us host the event. The staff were wonderful and looked after us all night.

Thank you to all the musicians who performed so well and did it all for free.

Thank you to Misa & Nadine who have worked behind the scenes on the website and design side of the fundraising.

And finally a BIG thanks to Kylie Emans & Beach & Bay for getting on board.

I believe that so long as the Queen’s Birthday remains a public holiday on the Australian national calendar, Australia itself will forever cling to the motherland. You just can’t beat a Monday morning sleep in. And it does feel good to see Australia’s medal tally at the Commonwealth Games outweigh all other nations combined, especially when we’re slowly moving down the Olympic medal tally every four years.

So whilst we are part of the Commonwealth and we do have a monarch’s birthday to celebrate; what is there to do on this glorious long weekend? It’s quite obvious really… go to a Scarecrow Festival.

The township of Milton on the NSW South Coast is opening its proverbial doors to the world for its annual Scarecrow Festival this June long weekend. The festivities will run Saturday and Sunday, with markets, music and entertainment from 10:00 am. Sunday is the big day when everyone brings their Scarecrows to town to compete for the coverted ‘Best Scarecrow’ Certificate. This year the festival has adopted a theme: ‘Traditional Scarecrows from the 1800s’. There will be street theatre, farmyard animals, games, rides and music running all throughout the day.

So why not make a weekend of it? Mollymook and Milton have a range of fashion boutiques, antiques, home wares, pubs and parklands as well as the spectacular surrounding coastline. Check out our self-contained accommodation in Mollymook here (2 minutes down the road from Milton) or contact Beach and Bay for more information.

Cronulla Pie Shop opens up to the public today and I must say, I’m rather excited.

We haven’t had a speciality pie shop in Cronulla for quite some time and it really is an Aussie tradition. Whether you eat yours on a hot summers day, at the footie or while on smoko’ break, meat pies are ingrained in Aussie culture & where better to have a pie shop than right in Cronulla Mall!

I went up and had a chat with the owner yesterday and Greg told me a little bit about his business. Greg & his family are local Sutherland Shire residents and have previously owned a pie shop in Mittagong. Greg said he received over 150 job applicants from his little sign out the front – and has now employed and trained a staff of locals.

Cronulla Pie Shop will offer 15 types of pies, both meat & vegetarian, & they also bake fresh cakes every day on premises. There is plenty of seating space in the mall & the shop has been beautifully fitted out, looking very fresh & modern.

At Beach & Bay we offer holiday accommodation properties in Cronulla & also sell Cronulla real estate so love to know exactly what is going on in the area.

Being a small independent agency we also love to support local small businesses and so encourage anyone and everyone to go try a pie!

Cronulla Pie Shop is located in Cronulla Mall – Cronulla Street. (Next door to Rundles & Payless shoes.)
