Is this winter weather keeping you firmly planted to the lounge? Get up, put on your shoes, and go do at least one of these things on this list!

Go whale Watching at Cape Solander
Catch a ferry to Bundeena and see the Bundeena/Maianbar Art Trail (first Sunday of the month)
Join one of the Cronulla swimming clubs and go ocean swimming between 5am and 8am (we haven’t road tested this one just yet….)
Visit the Hazelhurst Art Gallery in Gymea
Play 10 pin bowling at Sylvania (at least its in-doors!)
Visit the Brass Monkey Cronulla mid-week. There are always incredibly talented local and international bands playing week in and week out.
Spoil yourself and eat at Summersalt restaurant in Cronulla on a clear night (Enjoy that view)
Visit the Camelia Gardens in Caringbah and feed the ducks
Play a round of golf at Kareela Golf Course
Go for a bushwalk around Waterfall

Sutherland to Surf is only weeks away!

The Sutherland to Surf is fast approaching, which means my well-planned and rigorous training schedule is quickly falling by the wayside. In my mind I planned to run a few days a week in the months leading up to the race, but the body just couldn’t follow through. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

If you haven’t already, sign up! You can walk, run or roll the 11km down to Wanda Beach from Sutherland in any fashion you choose. 5000 competitors are expected to line up this year in the 39^th Sutherland to Surf.

The team at Beach and Bay will be there with bells on. We are running with Australian Youth Against Cancer (AYAC), a charity we have featured on our blog before. If you sign up and want to help out a worthy cause, jump on their website to join their running group or email ayac.fundraising@gmail.com.

Anna’s Shop Around The Corner (Cronulla)

I just discovered this little haven overlooking Munro Park today when a friend invited me for a coffee and catch up. With my friends two year old in toe this place is child-friendly with toys and a mat area for them to entertain themselves. They also offer great babycinos with marshmallows, and if all else fails there is the adjourning park for the kids to run around.

Packed at 10am with mothers and children, the café and bookshop (new and used) has a warm, relaxed atmosphere.

The most important thing though – how was the coffee? I would have to say pretty good and the vintage cups and chocolate treat are a nice touch. Two coffees and babycinos for $6 is a bargain in Cronulla. Apparently the food is good too, but that will have to wait til next time. Must get back to work at some point.

Shark Island Challenge

Now in its 14^th year, the Shark Island Challenge has been Australia’s premier bodyboarding event for many years and is arguably the most important event for the Cronulla wave-riding community. I say ‘wave-riding’ with a certain air of superiority. It is no secret that surfing and bodyboarding have a rich history of mutual disdain, but the Challenge is the only competitive bodyboarding competition that was recognised as a professional international competition.

For years the Shark Island Challenge was part of the World Tour of Bodyboarding, and was one of five stops on an international circuit of touring professionals. The 2010 competition is not part of this tour, having being scrapped for lack of funding. That’s not to say there will be a shortage of talent though.

The competitive field this year is made up of both local and international riders selected from industry sponsors, which this year includes two former world champions. Among the field of competitors, watch out for two young local riders John Showell of Cronulla, and Shaun Pyne of Gymea. Shaun has been deserved of a place in the Challenge for some time now and it’s great to see the organisers recognising his talent and offering him a spot.

The Challenge will run over one day in the most suitable conditions in the month-long waiting period, from June 14^th to July 14^th. Check out Fluidzone for more information.

Sutherland Shire Leader Article – ‘For Teneile’

Steven Vials & Beach & Bay were recently featured in the Sutherland Shire & St George Leader in an effort to raise more money for local girl Teneile Pawley. You can find the article below.

TENEILE Pawley, 17, was a healthy and happy teenager last year.

But disaster struck when the former Port Hacking High School student woke with an extreme fever.

She was rushed to hospital where she suffered two cardiac arrests, resulting in brain damage.

When Steven Vials of Caringbah, a long-time friend of the Pawley family, heard about what happened, he wanted to help.

Next month he will take part in a 250 kilometre marathon, “Racing The Planet”, which organises a series of races in The Sahara, Chile, China and Antarctica every year.

He will be one of 200 competitors from more than 30 countries who will run through the Kimberley in Western Australia, where temperatures can soar to 40 degrees. Mr Vials will dedicate his run to Teneile.

He has previously competed in ironman and other marathon events, but he said this six-day race would be his most difficult yet also his most rewarding.

“It will be a challenge, especially because it is self-supported, so I have to carry about 14 kilograms of food and water for the journey in my backpack,” he said.

“It is the first time I have done anything this long and extreme …but the family really needs the money.

“My daughter is of a similar age to Teneile, so I can imagine the impact of how their lives are changed forever.”

The Pawley family moved from Caringbah to Queensland about two months before Teneile became ill, on Father’s Day in September.

There she attends a brain injury rehabilitation facility where she receives daily therapy for her mystery condition.

She is only able to communicate using very limited speech and movement.

Some of Teneile’s former school colleagues established a Facebook support page for her treatment, and it has about 550 members.

Sutherland Shire real estate agency Beach and Bay Realty with Mr Vials hope to raise $20,000 for the Pawley family to support Teneile’s further operation costs and medical equipment, including a wheelchair.

They have raised about $10,000 so far. Donations can be made here.

Cronulla Pie Shop Opens!

Cronulla Pie Shop opens up to the public today and I must say, I’m rather excited.

We haven’t had a speciality pie shop in Cronulla for quite some time and it really is an Aussie tradition. Whether you eat yours on a hot summers day, at the footie or while on smoko’ break, meat pies are ingrained in Aussie culture & where better to have a pie shop than right in Cronulla Mall!

I went up and had a chat with the owner yesterday and Greg told me a little bit about his business. Greg & his family are local Sutherland Shire residents and have previously owned a pie shop in Mittagong. Greg said he received over 150 job applicants from his little sign out the front – and has now employed and trained a staff of locals.

Cronulla Pie Shop will offer 15 types of pies, both meat & vegetarian, & they also bake fresh cakes every day on premises. There is plenty of seating space in the mall & the shop has been beautifully fitted out, looking very fresh & modern.

Last Thursday Northies Cronulla held a fundraising gala event for Movember - (a month where men are encouraged to grow mo’s and raise money for Beyond Blue & The Prostate Cancer Foundation.) The night was great fun and the guys raised over $3000 for charity through generous donations and a huge raffle.

I took some photos for Northies – so here is a taste of some of the best looking mo’s and characters from the night.

Sutherland Shire Real Estate Blood Donation Challenge

Blood donations always remind me of my dear friend Michael Hartley who passed away (he always donated as often as possible) so when a letter from the Red Cross landed on my desk asking us to join a Real Estate Blood Drive, I couldn’t ignore it.

I’m inviting you all to join our office in this challenge. Between the 24th November 09 – 30th June 10 we are hoping to get lots of people down to the Shire Blood Donor Centre to spare an hour of their time and a couple litres of their blood.

Our team, Beach & Bay Realty, Cronulla will have an online tally on the Red Cross website which will show how many lives we have saved during the challenge. (Pretty cool to know the exact impact we are making!)

1 in 30 people require blood but only 1 in 3 people donate. 1 donation can save 3 lives and it costs nothing but an hour from your day.

So how do you sign up?
